Freaquently Asked Questions

If you're planning a remodel, repair, or home project, you probably have questions. This page is here to help you understand the process, know what to expect, and make informed decisions.

Working With a General Contractor

  • Are you licensed to do this work in California?

Yes. JCW General Construction holds CSLB license #1133241. You can verify it yourself at cslb.ca.gov any time. We're also fully insured and bonded. I'll put all of that in writing before we start anything.

  • How do I know the price won't change once the job starts?

I give you an itemized written estimate before anything starts. If we open a wall and find something that genuinely changes the scope, I stop and call you before we touch it. Nothing gets added without your approval first. That's how I've always run it.

  • Who is actually going to be working on my home?

Me. I'm on every job personally. You're not handing your home over to a crew you've never met while I move on to the next sale. If you have a question during the project, you call me directly. That's not a selling point. It's just how I work.

  • Do you handle permits or do I have to figure that out myself?

I handle it. Permits are part of the job and part of what you're hiring me for. You don't need to deal with the city or figure out what's required. I take care of all of it and keep you informed along the way.

  • How long is this project going to take?

Every project is different. I'd rather give you an honest timeline than a number designed to win the bid. Once I've seen the scope, I'll give you a realistic start to finish schedule in writing and I'll tell you upfront what could affect it.

  • What happens if something unexpected comes up during the project?

I tell you right away. I explain what it is, what it means for the project, and what it costs to address it. You make the call. Nothing moves forward without your say. Surprises behind a wall happen on renovation jobs. What matters is how you handle them when they do.

  • Do I need to be home while the work is happening?

Not every day. We'll talk through what makes sense for your situation. Some homeowners want to be around and some prefer not to be. Either way you'll hear from me with regular updates so you always know where things stand.

  • What's the first step? How do I actually get this started?

Call me or fill out the form on this page. I'll set up a time to come out to your home, take a look at what you're working with, and give you a straight answer on what the project involves and what it costs. No obligation. Just a real conversation.
